Fighter Blog: Travis Cohenour – Part 2!

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Hey everyone thanks for checking back on the blog here on like2fight.

So this time around it’s going to be all about work, training, and relationships-be it family, friends, or romantic.

I started doing a little training around the age of 19, but because I didn’t make enough money at work I had to teach myself with help here and there from guys who have done jiu-jitsu and also muay thai. The sad part was the place I would work with these guys at wouldn’t allow kickboxing on the heavy bags so we were forced to do it and risk losing our memberships at the gym. So finally at the age of 22 I now make enough to train and enjoy it in an environment where I can be myself and train the way I want to. The guys at the UFC Gym in Corona have been a welcoming family for me these past couple months there and I honestly can’t see myself training elsewhere. The only drawback of the gym being open 24 hours is that the classes happen to take place during the day at the same time I am at work.

I love my job at the auto center I am at, but it happens to take up so much of my time I hardly get to jump in the classes. The good part is that I make enough to pay my membership so I can train. On those days when I can jump in the classes, I definitely will take advantage of it and get my work on. For the most part it’s like it was before though, where I am training myself and working with people here and there, but the guys I work out with have the same mentality that I do…to make it as a fighter. It is my dream to become a world-class fighter and join the upper echelon of MMA organizations out there—the UFC. No one, not even work will prevent me from training and missing my shot at it, even though sometimes it cuts in the way of training a little bit.

Some of my biggest supporters of it are my family members and friends, but I have to say my biggest supporter is my girlfriend. Yeah of course we will fight sometimes about me spending so much time at the gym, but I know she supports me and doesn’t want me to give up on my dreams. My family on the other hand doesn’t like it because of how injuries could happen, but I know as well that they want me to do my best, even if they say they’re worried and don’t know if I should do it. Take my mom, for instance, she at first didn’t want me doing it but after seeing how enthusiastic I am for it has changed her mind and supports me. I know it’s not something a mother wants to hear from her son, that he wants to be a pro fighter for the rest of his life but she does accept it now and I love her more for that. My friends though have always said, “Alright go and do it. We’ve got your back with it.” They have sat for hours on end and listened to me talking about fights and hearing my predictions for them upcoming fights and listened to me ramble on and on about how it is actually not like some people think of the sport.

So for all those out there who have supported me and my dreams of fighting I thank you with all my heart and promise to not let you down. You will see me in the octagon being announced as the UFC champion one day.

So I leave you with these words once again my friends,

“Fight hard and live free”
